ABOUT BHUTAN

THE MOUNTAINOUS COUNTRY

The state is situated on the south of the eastern Himalayas, landlocked between the Tibet Autonomous Region to the north and the Indian states of Sikkim, West Bengal, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to the west and south. Bhutan, the Himalayan kingdom has the charm of Himalaya nowhere else in the world. A land lock Himalayan country situated in between the Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam and Sikkim and Republic of China. Bhutan is known for its beautiful landscape like any other Himalayan Kingdom, monastery / Dzong, snow capped mountains and the diversity of the region including the people and the land. The northern part of Bhutan like all other Himalayan country consists of glaciated mountain peaks with an extremely cold weather like North Sikkim or North of Nepal. Most peaks in the north are over 7000 meters and are generally snow capped throughout the year. The highest point is the Kula Kangri at an elevation of nearly 7553 meters. The peaks in the Black mountains vary between altitudes of approximately 1500 meters to 2700 meters above sea level. The Torsa, Raidak, Sankosh, and Manas are the main rivers of Bhutan, flowing through this region. Most of the people live in the central highlands. Bhutan Package tour at low cost is offered by us. For all Indians passport is not required to enter Bhutan only Voters ID card / Driving License is required, all other county's citizen must apply for a visa at least 30 days in advance. Spring and autumn are the best season to visit Bhutan as the climate is milder. Generally, October - November and April – mid - June are the best times to visit as rainfall is at a minimum and temperatures are conducive. Bumathang situated at an altitude of 3750 meters basically consist of four valleys Ura, Chumey, Tang and Choekhor and are beautiful places to visit but requires a package of 10 days by road if entered by road. Paro is historic town with sacred sites and historical buildings scattered through the area and require three night stay to visit all the places. It has the only international airport served by Bhutan Airways. Punakha is bordered by Thimpu, Gasa and Wangdue Phodrang dzongkhag and the view over the Himalayas at Do Chula Pass at 10500 feet is scenic. The main points of entry are through Phuentsholing in the south that links Bhutan with the Indian plains of West Bengal, through Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar that links with the Indian state of Assam and through Paro, where the entry is through Druk Air, the National airline of Bhutan. Guest will have to carry ones passport and also some passport size photographs or voter’s registration card in Indian. If you plan to travel by road, the endorsement is done at the entry points in Phuentsholing, Samdrup Jongkhar, and Gelephu. If entry is by flight, at Paro Airport, the formalities will be completed at the Airport itself.

Airways - Phuentsholling is nearly 170 kilometers from Bagdogra airport (IXB). Bhutan’s national air carrier, Druk Air operates several flights per week from Bangkok, Delhi, Kolkata and Kathmandu. The flight passes along the Himalayan Range and all the peaks seems so close. Recent addition is the flight from Paro to Bagdogra airport. Paro is the only airport of Bhutan. Bagdogra Airport contributes more tourist flow to Bhutan than Paro.

Railways - There are no railway system in Bhutan. Indian government is planning to set up a railway network as per recent talks between the two countries. Yet one can travel close up to the Bhutan border at Hashimara by Indian Railway. Nearest major railway station is Alipurduar but Birpara and Hashimara also. Phuentsholing in Bhutan is approximately 182 kilometers by and is four / five hour's drive from New Jalpaiguri railway Station (NJP).

Roadways – Jaigaon the Indian border town is 180 kilometers from Siliguri and another two kilometers it's Phuentsholing. Phuentsholing is four / five hour's drive from Bagdogra Airport (IXB) / New Jalpaiguri and five to six hours drive from Gangtok or Darjeeling. The Royal Bhutanese Government runs a bus service to Phuentsholing from Kolkata. Phuentsholing is the only entry / exit point via road. The other is entry point is Samdrup Jongkhar from Guwahati in Assam. From Phuntsholing journey begin through endless turns and hair-pin bends till Thimphu. The travel time for the 176 kilometers stretch can be more than 6 hours.
